Finally Watched Earthlings. Here are my thoughts Part 1 of 5

8:59 PM

Like the title says, I finally watched Earthlings. For any of you who don't know, Earthlings is a documentary film narrated by Joaquin Phoenix depicting the largest animal industries in the world from slaughterhouses to circuses to the fur trade.

Earthlings: The Trailer. *Warning: Not for the Faint of Heart*

I knew I couldn't watch the movie alone, so I asked my friend, a very passionate ethical vegan if she would watch it with me and she reluctantly agreed.  We were hysterically nervous even before the movie started.  Our reasoning was that we are already vegan, we know what's happening in the world, do we really need to watch the truth?
The answer was yes.
The movie is divided into 5 parts.
Part 1: "Pets"
Puppy mills are discussed in some detail.  Too many of the sweet little puppies we buy from pet stores are bred and housed in crates like these
in which profit>their well-being.  Because of the overabundance of animals from breeders and puppy mills, people have been finding more and more creative ways to kill these pets {dogs and cats, usually.}  Euthanasia is one in which is pretty well known, but the method that I didn't know about was that of gas chambers.

What I learned: Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter.
Does spaying and neutering hurt the animals?  According to the Humane Society of Charlotte website, "During a spay or neuter surgery, dogs and cats are fully anesthetized, so they feel no pain. Afterwards, most animals seem to experience some discomfort, but signs of discomfort disappear within a few days, and with pain management medication, pain may not be experienced at all. Serious harm as a result of spay or neuter surgery is extremely rare. " You can read more about the surgery on the Dogtime website.

Visit Nation Earth for more on Earthlings and the upcoming film Unity which is the sequel that has apparently just been released 27th Oct.  and features 100 different celebrities or something like that? So..I know what I'm watching next.

Stay tuned for Part 2
